Silver & Black, Sony’s Second Spider-Man Spinoff, Gets A Release Date

Silver & Black will be Sony’s second film in their own Spider-Man Universe, following Venom, which has a release date of October 5, 2018. Silver & Black will follow the classic Spider-Man allies Silver Sable and Black Cat in their own adventure. Lisa Joy (Westworld) and Chris Yost (Thor: Ragnarok) have both worked on the screenplay, which will be directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (Secret Life of Bees, Beyond the Lights). That’s all we really know for sure about the film, save for the release date, which has just come to light.

Exhibitor Relations tweeted the release date of Silver & Black, set for February 8, 2019, almost exactly four months after Venom.

Though we don’t know what movie Sony has planned next after these first two initial entries into their own “SpiderVerse” or “VenomVerse,” releasing these films so close to one another puts Sony on a timetable of release similar to Marvel Studios’ own Marvel Cinematic Universe, where Spider-Man: Homecoming calls home. Not only that, but Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 follows Silver & Black by another five months. That’s a lot of Spider-Man characters over nine months!

This may mean nothing, but there could be character crossover between the two universes, for all we know. The MCU and Sony’s universe have been called separate multiple times in the past, though Sony producer Amy Pascal has also said that these films are in the same “world” as was established in Spider-Man in Homecoming. Likely, there will be no crossover, but in the words of Pascal, “Never say never.”

For those of you thinking February is and odd month to pick for a superhero flick, don’t forget about the original Deadpool film, which was released on February 12, 2016. By releasing Spider-Man related films in October and February, Sony does appear to not only be avoiding other studio tent-poles, but also extending the blockbuster season just a bit more. Soon, every month will have its own superhero flick, mark my words.
