Sony is definitely taking an interesting approach to its 21 Jump Street franchise. First there was the announcement of a 23 Jump Street starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum- despite the last sequel mocking the very idea of further sequels- then there was the green light given to a female-led spinoff, and now there’s news of the latter project being given a dual-track development in terms of the script.
When the female-centric Jump Street was announced, it was said to be written by Broad City‘s Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs. Now THR is reporting that Bob’s Burgers scribes Lizzie and Wendy Molyneux have been hired to write the film as well. However, that’s not to mean that they’ll be working with Aniello and Downs. Quite the contrary. They’ve been tasked with writing a completely separate script for the film. Sony will then look at the two scripts and decide which one they’ll proceed with.
Sony’s approach is similar to what WB/DC is doing with some of the upcoming films on their slate- where they have different writers working on versions of films like Wonder Woman and Aquaman until someone decides which is the right take. Sony is the same studio that is developing a female-driven Ghostbusters reboot.
