Spider-Man: Homecoming – Tom Holland On How This Entry Differs From Previous Films

It is safe to say that Marvel fans around the globe sleep easier at night knowing Spider-Man has come home. While the Marvel Cinematic Universe has set the standard for shared universes, fans have always felt something was missing, that the collection was incomplete, and they were right. The actor who plays what is likely to become the definitive version of the webslinger, Tom Holland, recently spoke with Yahoo! Movies on how his Spider-Man will be different from previous interpretations of the character. With Spider-Man: Homecoming, the character is no longer enclosed within his own universe, and Holland says the Avengers has given the character a new sense of purpose.

“I think the difference now is that Peter Parker finally has an all-time goal, and his goal is to become an Avenger. Everything he does, even though he’s doing it for the right reasons, is done so that maybe one day he can become an Avenger and prove himself to Tony Stark. And I think we’ve never really seen Spider-Man with that kind of motivation before.”

Holland is correct, being able to play in the MCU is new territory for the character, and will most likely be beneficial for both Marvel and Sony. In the previous installments of the character, Spidey was alone, he didn’t have a Tony Stark to mentor and guide him in using his powers. Now he not only has Stark, but a whole team of older and more experienced heroes and its likely they will take a shine to him and treat him as sort of a little brother.

“But it’s also nice to really see a kid with superpowers. We’ve seen the scientist, the billionaire, the god. Now it’s time to see what would happen if a kid was given those responsibilities. And it’s fun, it makes it more funny because he doesn’t really know what to do with them, how to use them, when to use them, and it’s just a very different, grounded version of what I think superhero movies are.”

A young hero struggling with his new powers has always been a theme in the Spider-Man films, and it appears as if the upcoming film will continue that tradition as well as break new ground in the MCU. Holland won fans over portraying the character in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, and left fans wanting more, which they will soon get with Spider-Man: Homecoming.
