Ever since it was announced that Sony and Marvel Studios would be collaborating on a new Spider-Man movie, everyone’s first question was…”who would play Mary Jane Watson?” Sure, not every Spidey film has had a Mary Jane, but she’s certainly the more recognizable love interest to mainstream audiences, and given that The Amazing Spider-Man had most recently tackled Gwen Stacy, it made sense that they may teeter back over to Mary Jane for Spider-Man: Homecoming.
However, when Zendaya was cast as the leading female role, folks were a bit stunned. Needless to say, Zendaya doesn’t match the physical profile of your standard Mary Jane Watson. In months that passed, fans were reassured time and time again that no, Zendaya would NOT be playing Mary Jane, and that Mary Jane wouldn’t even have a role in the film. Her role would be named Michelle, but every so often, you’d get a report hinting that Sony and Marvel Studios were just being coy.
It turns out they were being coy, but not for the reasons fans originally thought. Movie Pilot has revealed that the junior novelization of the upcoming flick has given us a reason behind all the secrecy. Michelle’s full name is Michelle Toomes. That’s right, Zendaya’s character is the daughter of Michael Keaton’s Adrian Toomes, a.k.a. The Vulture.
This certainly works to make things a bit more personal for Peter. While his relationship with Michelle is unclear based on the trailers, the fact that there’s a student whose father is the big bad of the film, makes things hit a whole lot closer to home. And you know what? As contrived as that may feel, it’s always been a big party of Spider-Man that he be unknowingly surrounded by his worst enemies, so it’s very much in keeping with the character.
What do you think of this reveal? Do you like that they’re not going for the typical love interest direction for Zendaya? Let us know your thoughts down below!
Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters on July 7, 2017.
