Star Wars: Rian Johnson Open To Bringing Back Old Characters In New Trilogy

News regarding Rian Johnson taking on a new Star Wars trilogy was a godsend for a lot of fans. While it was great hear that Lucasfilm was interested in keeping things going, what was really fantastic was hearing that they were going in a wholly unique direction for this one.

This new trilogy wouldn’t be an anthology, and it wouldn’t be a continuation of the main Star Wars saga. For the first time since Disney bought Lucasfilm, it seemed to bring the promise of new originality. However, in a new statement to Yahoo!, it sounds like Johnson isn’t opposed to one thing: bringing back old Star Wars characters.

“I’m just starting to think about it, and get into, so who knows? I want to keep it just totally wide open in terms of possibilities. That’s what’s so exciting about it right now, just the notion of one story, three movies, the sky’s the limit. We can really do anything. The possibilities are thrilling.”

Of course, we can’t take this as a confirmation that this means he will bring back old characters. All it means is that he’s in the development stage, and literally has no idea, and doesn’t want to box himself into a creative corner.

And what about one particularly hated character? Johnson joked about that.

“I would be down with bringing old Jar Jar back — we’ll see. What if it was just in the style of The Wrestler except it was Jar Jar? We’d shoot it in black and white.”

That’d definitely be the talk of the town.
