If you grew up a huge Stephen King fan, 2017 is turning out to be the wet dream you never could have planned for. This year alone, we’re getting adaptations of two pieces of his seminal works: IT and The Dark Tower. Additionally, work has begun on Castle Rock, a series that works as something of a shared universe between a lot of his stories, and Mr. Mercedes is also set to premiere this fall. If all that wasn’t enough, Spike will also be remaking one of his shorter novellas, The Mist, into a new TV series.

The name may sound familiar, even if you haven’t read the novel, as a movie adaptation was made back in 2007, crafted by Stephen King expert Frank Darabont (the man behind the film classic The Green Mile — not to mention creator of The Walking Dead TV show). The film was of the low budget variety, and as such, the visual effects left a lot to be desired, even back then. However, there was no mistaking the storytelling prowess displayed in it, and it introduced many a fan to King’s great 1980 novella.

Given today’s TV-hungry atmosphere in Hollywood, it is one of many shows now being re-worked for TV. However, whereas a lot of his work (like 11.22.63) is long enough to stand up as a TV series, The Mist stands alone in its shortness. A lot of the content will need to be fabricated in order to work in a TV setting.

If you’re wondering just how they’re planning on doing it, their approach is all too apparent in this new trailer.

Check it out below:

While the original story is largely confined to a supermarket, the new series looks to be more sweeping in nature. It will follow many characters in various location, not to mention people trapped in the mist itself. It’s a bold approach, and one has to wonder if the claustrophobic element of the original story will be lost in the process. We’ll have to wait and see.

The official synopsis for The Mist is below:

“Based on a story by Stephen King, Spike’s The Mist centers around a small town family that is torn apart by a brutal crime. As they deal with the fallout an eerie mist rolls in, suddenly cutting them off from the rest of the world and, in some cases, each other. Family, friends and adversaries become strange bedfellows, battling the mysterious mist and its threats, fighting to maintain morality and sanity as the rules of society break down. The Mist stars Morgan Spector, Alyssa Sutherland, Gus Birney, Danica Curcic, Okezie Morro, Luke Cosgrove, Darren Pettie, Russell Posner, Dan Butler, Isiah Washington, Jr. and Frances Conroy.”
