Stranger Things 2: This Character Originally Had A Much Darker Fate [SPOILERS]

It’s no secret that TV shows often originally plan to kill off a character early on, only to find value in said character based on the development of the script or the strengths of the actor. This was the case with characters like Jesse Pinkman in Breaking Bad, and was sort of the case with Bob in Stranger Things 2.

If you don’t want to be spoiled, look away now.

Of course, as we know, Sean Astin’s Bob does end up getting killed in the penultimate episode of Stranger Things 2, but his fate was originally much darker, as executive producer Shawn Levy revealed to Collider when the outlet asked about the potential for killing off a major character in this season.

“That was never on the table. We had talked about the death of some major characters, that may or may not happen in the future near or far. But that was never part of the discussion for Season 2. The death of Bob was initially much earlier. In fact, in an early outline, Evil Will kill[ed] him in like Episode 3.”

That certainly would have been a much darker turn for the character. Of course, there would have been a lot of mental ramifications they’d have to deal with in future seasons, so perhaps that was one stone that was better left unturned. Also, with Bob playing a more heroic role in the show, his death really got to mean something, which can’t be understated.

“We wanted to keep him alive longer, and then use his death as Joyce’s engine. The avenging of that would become Joyce’s engine for the finale.”

I think they made the right choice here, but what do you think? Was Bob’s death effective, or would you have preferred the original death? Let us know down below!
