STRANGER THINGS Actor Noah Schnapp On Will’s Potential Season 2 Journey

Disclaimer: This article containsspoilers for Stranger Things Season 1.

The Netflix series Stranger Things was definitely quite the surprise hit for a lot of TV fans. In a succinct 8 episodes, the show managed to weave a compelling narrative — one that more than paid off by the end of its runtime. While the filmmakers worked hard to make sure that the experience was complete and rewarding for viewers, they made sure t leave a few extra lingering mysteries, giving them room to expand their story in successive seasons.

One of these mysteries had to do with the fate of Will, a character who spent most of the first season hiding from the Demogorgon in the Upside Down. Yes, by the end of it all, he was found and brought home, supposedly safe from all the dangers that had plagued him for as long as he was missing. However, in one of the show’s final scenes we saw Will disappear into the bathroom and throw up these weird creatures into the sink. Clearly this wasn’t just going to be your textbook happy ending.

But what can we expect next season? Speaking with THR, actor Noah Schnapp, who played Will in the show, discussed where he thinks his character could go in the next season — though he was careful to point out that he truly has no idea what to expect.

“Just like you said, I don’t know. But my guess is that maybe he’s going to become evil in the next season. If he’s coughing up these baby Demogorgons, or eggs, or something, maybe he’s incubating or holding these eggs inside of him and he’s trying to fight his good side against his bad side in the next season. That would be cool to see, to see him become evil.

“I mean, there are so many ways Will can go in the next season with how they set it up. But honestly, any way would be pretty cool. But it would be pretty cool to play an evil Will.

“I think Will’s mind is going crazy right now. So much has happened. He’s seen this crazy monster. He’s been in another dimension. He’s seen this other world. He’s probably thinking: ‘What is happening with me?’ When he comes back, I think he’s trying to fit in and act normal. But he’s trying to hide what’s actually happening to him.”

It seems like an easy guess that Will will retain some mental scars from his time in the Upside Down, and the things he coughs up certainly seem to have some physical effect on him, but I have a hard time believing that we’ll get an “evil Will” next season. There’s nothing that indicates these creatures can possess and control humans, and if anything, I’d more expect to see something similar to the chest-bursting scene in Alien than I’d expect to see Will go bad, but it’s hard to say. Our experience thus far with the Demogorgon is rather limited, so the whole “body snatching” angle is definitely one that can be utilized.

It is, however, an approach that can be easily abused. Whenever we have a character that’s under the influence of some other foreign creature or person, it tends to be an eternally frustrating experience. In many ways, it’s a bit of  a slippery slope, and kind of a sloppy way to tell a story, so I very much hope they don’t go the evil Will angle.
