UPDATE: SUICIDE SQUAD 2 – Mel Gibson In The Running To Direct DC Supervillain Sequel?

UPDATE:

While attending a screening of Hacksaw Ridge, Gibson confirmed that the talks with Warner Bros regarding Suicide Squad 2 were indeed happening, but as of this writing, they are no where near any sort of deal.

“It’s kind of a first date,” he told the moderator. You can take a look at the video below, though be warned that the audio is very low.

Also of note from Variety reporter Justin Kroll:

ORIGINAL STORY:

Whether or not you liked Batman v Superman or Suicide Squad, there is no doubt that the DC Extended Universe is off to a bit of a rocky start. Yes, there are plenty out there who liked those movies — and rest assured, they made plenty of cash — but the narrative surrounding these movies is that they weren’t as strong as they could be. Just look at the box office of Batman v Superman. At around $855 million worldwide, it made the bare minimum of what one would expect a film with Batman and Superman to make. Add in all the Ben Affleck drama surrounding The Batman, and you have fans like us worried that if Wonder Woman and Justice League aren’t AMAZING movies, that we may be nearing the end of the DCEU before it truly gets off the ground.

Well, we can’t say that Warner Bros isn’t laying the groundwork to get all this done. Aquaman is still nearing production, The Batman — all troubles aside — is still in active development, along with The Flash, and off to the side, we have Suicide Squad director David Ayer developing the spinoff film Gotham City Sirens. So what does this mean for the brand of Suicide Squad? Are they simply going to let that one disappear into the background in favor of bigger franchises?

Fat chance.

Not only does Warner Bros appear to be actively looking to continue the Suicide Squad in a sequel, but according to a recent report from Deadline, they even have a huge name in the mix in the form of Hacksaw Ridge director Mel Gibson. That’s right, Mel Gibson himself has apparently had conversations about helming a superhero flick (well, supervillain flick).

He’s not the only one. Variety is reporting that Warner Bros has also met with Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland), Daniel Espinosa (Safe House), and Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies).

As of this writing, there appears to be no frontrunner, but Mel Gibson definitely seems to be the biggest high profile name on the list, and considering his latest film has snagged him a Best Picture and Best Director nomination at the Oscars, it could be a direction for him to go help resurrect his career — assuming that the movie is well received, of course.

Of the others on the list, I can see Fleischers Zombieland-esque irreverence being a solid fit for Suicide Squad 2 — again, assuming that the script is worth producing. In all honesty, we’re a bit more interested in finding out who they have writing the script at this point, as that could give us some real insight as to what type of film we’re dealing with.

What do you think of this news? Do any of these names get you excited for a Suicide Squad sequel? Should there be a Suicide Squad sequel? Let us know your thoughts down below!
