Superman Returns To Supergirl For Its Season 2 Finale!

Like many folks, I was a bit skeptical about the CW introducing Superman in the Supergirl series. There were a variety of reasons for it. While I enjoy Supergirl, there is no mistaking it was quite the cheesy show, and I was worried at how this may affect the portrayal of the Man of Steel. Would the cheeseball factor be too over-the-top — even for Superman? My other concern revolved around the state of Supergirl as a series. For its entire run at the time, Kara would talk about being under Superman’s shadow, and despite a few silhouettes here and there, they managed to avoid showing him. Would finally showing Superman cast her right back under the shadow?

The answer was yes and no. First of all, Tyler Hoechlin’s portrayal of the character was pitch perfect. It was just the right blend of cheeseball and badass — a real tribute to the work of Christopher Reeve. Because of how likable they managed to make Superman, the show did run the risk of focusing too much on him, and not enough on Kara. Luckily, the delicate balance they needed was perfect, and with Cat Grant leaving the show, Superman was a much-needed easing of that bombshell that could have been detrimental.

So naturally, after the great response fans have had to Superman, the next logical question is: when is he coming back? Short of making him a series regular, most fans seem to be in favor of bringing in more Superman. While we can’t say whether or not he’ll become a frequent guest star, the folks over at E! have now officially confirmed that Superman will be returning for the season finale of Supergirl.

As of right now, there are no details surrounding what circumstances bring the Man of Steel back to National City, but we’re certainly looking forward to it. While I wouldn’t say Supergirl has been bad this season, it has been one of ups and downs. Between the moving from CBS to The CW, the series hit some real bumps. As mentioned above, Cat left the show, and as such, the entire dynamic between the leads characters shifted. For its entire season, Supergirl seems like it’s been trying to rediscover what it is, and it hasn’t made for the easiest walking experience.

Hopefully Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman will inject a bit of much-needed adrenaline.
