Supernatural: Scooby-Doo Crossover In The Works For Next Season

The Winchester brothers are giving up the Impala in exchange for a ride in the Mystery Machine. The long running CW show Supernatural, having been on air since way back when the network was called the WB, will have an animated Scooby-Doo crossover episode during its next season. The announcement was made at the CW’s Upfront presentation this morning.

Supernatural (renewed for its thirteenth season in January) follows two brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester, who were raised by their father to be hunters of, well, just about any paranormal creature you can think of, from ghosts and demons to elves and imaginary friends, the writers are open to explore any avenue of lore and myth.

While the show will always go back to its basic premise, two brothers hunting things that go bump in the night, the writers of the show have proven to be very inventive in their ways to keep the show fresh and original.

Every once in a while the writers throw a treat the fans way in the form of a putting the boys in very odd situations. This Scooby-Doo crossover appears to be the next installment in what are some of the best episodes of Supernatural, episodes where they go completely out of the usual parameters of the show, and ones that are filled with self-referential humor.

For example, in the episode “The Monster at the End of This Book,” Sam and Dean come across a series of paperback novels called, Supernatural, that just so happen to be about two brothers, named Sam and Dean. In “Changing Channels”, the brothers find themselves thrown into a television universe and are forced to act out various television clichés, from a buddy sitcom to a medical drama called Dr. Sexy, and finally a very unusual Japanese game show.

Supernatural has always been able to poke fun at itself, along with pop culture in general. These kinds of episodes are right in the shows wheelhouse and the Scooby-Doo idea actually seems like a natural fit.

Yes, we all know that Crowley would have gotten away with it, if it weren’t for those meddling brothers!

Is this something you are excited about seeing?
