UPDATE: Actors Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey recently took to Twitter to share the first footage from the upcoming film. The exchange between them is classic, but the footage is even better!
To call Stephen King’s fantasy novel series The Dark Tower ambitious would be an understatement. To many fans, it is the epitome of what would call an “unfilmable” book. However, we live in a time where even the most ambitious of stories are making their way to screens, big and small alike. Lord of the Rings had a successful run in theaters, Game of Thrones is making history on television, and The Dark Tower seems poised to do its best with both mediums.
First up will be the feature adaptation, which stars Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey as the Gunslinger and the Man in Black, respectively. The film is being coined as something of a mishmash, as well as a brand new story set in The Dark Tower world. We honestly have little idea what that means, and despite the images and details we’ve received for the film, we have very little to go on. However, the folks over at Columbia Pictures seem about ready to roll out the marketing campaign for this film, which is set to hit theaters in August.
The first thing we’re getting is a series of motion poster heralding the new trailer premiere, which is set to hit tomorrow. Check them out below!
Motion posters are kind of a hit and miss thing. Sometimes, they’re cool, showing us some added insight into the characters. Sometimes, they’re pretty dull. I’m afraid that for me, these ones fall under the dull category. I much prefer my motion posters to contain actual moving footage in it. Unfortunately, what we have here are still images with movement added in After Effects. It gives it a very stilted, awkward feel (especially the Man in Black one).
That being said, I wouldn’t start worrying yet. The trailer is coming tomorrow, and we can’t wait to see the worlds that await us in The Dark Tower!
Below is the official synopsis for The Dark Tower:
“The last Gunslinger, Roland Deschain, has been locked in an eternal battle with Walter O’Dim, also known as the Man in Black, determined to prevent him from toppling the Dark Tower, which holds the universe together. With the fate of the worlds at stake, good and evil will collide in the ultimate battle as only Roland can defend the Tower from the Man in Black.”
The Dark Tower hits theaters on August 4, 2017.
