The Joker/Jason Todd Rumor Is Dead: SUICIDE SQUAD Director David Ayer Ends Speculation

Sorry, superfans, but the “Joker is Jason Todd” rumor can finally be put to rest.

While BATMAN v SUPERMAN may not have been everyone’s cup of tea, there is little denying how interesting the mythology in the DC Extended Universe is, as it is has become a hotbed of rumors . We are living in a world where Batman has fought crime for decades, and clashed with the Joker more times than anyone can count. There was even some pretty damning evidence that pointed to the Joker killing Robin, which already has been analyzed to death (that evidence is shown in the photo above).

Somewhere along the way, however, there was speculation that the Joker didn’t actually kill Jason Todd, but that he was Jason Todd, and the armor with the spray paint on it was meant to taunt the Caped Crusader. While general logic would seem to imply the former — that the Joker killed Jason Todd — we didn’t quite have enough evidence to discard the Jason Todd/Joker rumor…until now.

In a recent interview with SUICIDE SQUAD David Ayer was asked what the craziest fan rumor he heard regarding the film while shooting. David Ayer’s response was beyond blunt:

“That the Joker is Jason Todd. It ain’t the case. He’s not.”

In the distance, you may be able to hear the wailing of fanboys all around the world. However, every dark cloud has a silver lining. With that rumor behind us, this opens the way for the Red Hood rumors. If Jason Todd isn’t the Joker, then there’s still a chance that Red Hood could be brought back into the DCEU picture at some point. There have been some rumors that this is exactly what Ben Affleck’s standalone Batman film will chronicle, but they seem to directly clash with rumors that state the film will be more of an Arkham Asylum-based film.

What do you think about Ayer debunking this fan rumor? Are you disappointed or relieved that the DCEU won’t foray in this direction? Let us know your thoughts down below!

SUICIDE SQUAD hits theaters on August 5, 2016.
