Fox’s The Orville has been renewed for a second season, Variety reports. The show stars Seth MacFarlane as Captain Ed Mercer, who leads the crew of the exploratory union ship, The Orville, on missions through space. Fox’s president of entertainment, Michael Thorn, had the following to say about the show.

“Once again Seth has struck a powerful chord with viewers. He has delivered a series full of optimism, drama and his trademark humor. We want to thank him and the rest of the talented cast, as well as the producers and crew, for an incredible first season. We can’t wait to see where The Orville travels in the second.”

Joining MacFarlane’s Captain Mercer, is his first mate and ex-wife, Commander Kelly Grayson, played by Adrienne Palicki, Lieutenant Bortis, played by Peter Macon, and Lieutenant Gordon Malloy, played by Scott Grimes.

I have found a few of the episodes to have some really cool ideas and an almost Twilight Zone type feel to them. While I enjoy it the show, I do agree that at times the show has a difficulty deciding whether it wants to be a comedy or drama. Having both is absolutely ok, most shows do, but finding the right balance is the key, yet, The Orville still seems to be working out the finer details of that aspect.

i seriously thought it was canceled, but hey good for them. I always had positive feeling about Adrienne Palicki….. just need to sit down and watch an episode and not just hate watch STD

Orville is awesome. More social commentary than STD. I won’t watch STD watched up to episode 3. It’s nothing like Star Trek it’s basically a world that is worse than the one we are in now. If anything it’s the opposite of Star Trek. And don’t get me started on spore drive…

it gets better on episode 7…… yes, you read that, it takes them 7 episodes to do a science fiction episode that’s about 70 million bucks in before they can get into doing SCI FI. STD’s biggest flaw is that it sets up these events and they just burn through them as fast as possible and pretend “well that’s what really would happen.” That’s action movie logic without the Shane Black witty dialog.
Yeah, I mean I should get into Orville because I really enjoy Palicki charisma even if she’s on a show I hate like Agents of Shield, but somehow I just went through STD out of spite and seeing it through….. you know like how much geeks suffer through bad shows.

Don’t believe him GeneralK STD is god awful! I mean don’t get me started on how idiotic the show is. The Orville has more social commentary or moral story telling on half an episode that STD has had all season so far.

you’re confused, he’s not for it and neither am I. I was trying to explain how the show had a slight improvement by episode 7 by having a more scifi plot then just action plot point and even still I don’t know how bad the characters will get later down the line. Been rewatching Next Gen and as much as everyone says “first 2 seasons are hard to sit through.” No they aren’t as bad as all of STD. I seriously think STD has to be living inside the Mirror Mirror world of the Abrams universe because Beyond was actually really great.

    Hot damn!

While I personally enjoy ST:Discovery much more, I have been DVRing Orville and generally watch within seven days. And as the season has gone on, I am enjoying the episodes more and more.

What I really love about the Orville though is how low the productions cost must be. I alot of the sets are very TOS in that way. Also most like a stage production, just enough to give you a rough impression of the setting but nothing over the top.

And I like this because Seth is concentrating on the story as the most important aspect and not the window dressing. Story is the key to good Science fiction, not expensive sets, lots of CGI and space battles,

    Good for Seth…

How can you like STD if you think a good story is needed?

I know this shoe gets a lot of negative comments but i love it. Decent effects, topical subject matter, and its McFarlane-esque comedy does not always work but it still seems to put a smile on my face.
