The Punisher: Who Is Jigsaw And Could We See Him Soon?

Please note that this article contains SPOILERS from the first season of Netflix’s The Punisher.

Last Friday, Netflix finally debuted the first season of Marvel’s The Punisher starring Jon Bernthal, Deborah All Woll, Ben Barnes, Amber Rose Revah and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. After it’s first weekend it is currently has a 62% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and currently has an audience score of 94%. After finishing the first season, we should take a moment to look at a character that has been transformed into one of the Punisher’s greatest villain, Jigsaw.

Jigsaw was created by the late Len Wein and Ross Andru in 1976. He made his debut in Marvel Comics’ Amazing Spider-Man #162 and then was featured in Marvel Comics’ The Punisher #1 in 1986.

Billy “The Beaut” Russo was kicked out by his father at a young age, which led him to crime. He got the nickname as he rose in the criminal underground due to his good looks. He was a successful assassin who took jobs from both the Costa Family and the Maggia. In one instance Frank Costa hired Russo to kill Frank Castle and all who were connected to him. He is able to kill every one of his targets but Castle, who quickly tracks him down in a Maggia nightclub. Castle kills everyone but Russo who he knocks through a glass pane disfiguring his face.

With extensive surgeries Russo is able to make a full recovery. But his life would change forever as Castle had left his face beyond repair, with puzzle like scars. This leads Russo to become very unstable and obsessed with getting revenge and adopting the name of Jigsaw. Being that he had been an accomplished assassin, Jigsaw is an experienced street fighter, strategist, weapons expert and tactician.

Jigsaw has already made an appearance in a Marvel film as the main villain for Lionsgate’s Punisher: War Zone in 2008 played by actor Dominic West. He is also featured in a couple of the Punisher’s video games throughout the years.

The reason why Jigsaw is important is because it looks like he may be featured in a future season of Netflix’s The Punisher. In the first season Billy Russo is played by Ben Barnes, in which they make sure we notice his good looks throughout the 13 episodes. They change his background story a bit, making him an old military buddy of Frank Castle’s. They are close enough to where in a flashback scene you can hear Castle’s kids call him “Uncle Billy.” He is not directly responsible for the deaths of Castle’s family, but he was well aware of what was going on and his associates intentions. In the end Castle rubs Russo’s face against a broken mirror which leaves him unrecognizable.

With seemingly everyone who wronged Frank Castle dead or in custody, it will be interesting to see where they go from here. Will Russo come back for revenge? Does he team up with another villain from Castle’s rouge gallery? Also I look forward to seeing how they do the make-up for Jigsaw’s face. What did you think of the first season of The Punisher? Do you want to see Ben Barnes back for another season? Let us know below!
