‘THE WOLVERINE III’ Was Aiming For an R-Rating Long Before ‘DEADPOOL’ Came Out?

An R-rating for a Wolverine-focused picture is something fans have been wanting for a long time. Deadpool may have recently set the world on fire, what with all its success despite its R-rating, but it shouldn’t be misunderstood that its success had any influence on the approach Fox is taking with THE WOLVERINE III.

At least, that’s what Den of Geek is saying. The outlet claims a couple things. First, it claims to have sources that confirm that 20th Century Fox is indeed shooting for an R-rating for Hugh Jackman’s last outing as Wolverine. Furthermore, it claims that this is something that was decided on by the filmmakers far in advance. Den of Geek said the following:

“While that other X-Men spin-off movie grossing $132 million in three days is undoubtedly another great incentive to maintain the tone for THE WOLVERINE III, the filmmakers behind the mutant superhero film, including director James Mangold, have been planning for years to make a more violent farewell to Jackman’s beloved alter-ego due to the content of the OLD MAN LOGAN source material. While the MPAA of course makes the final determination of a film’s rating, the plan has always been to aim for an R.”

Given that THE WOLVERINE III is poised to be Jackman’s last time playing Logan, it makes sense that the studio would be willing to go out with a big bang. In fact, the pattern for the films have been leaning as such. The first Wolverine flick was rated PG-13, and while the second one was as well, the studio did end up releasing an extended, unrated cut of the film on Blu-Ray. This seems to indicate that Fox is more than aware of fans’ desire to see a completely no holds barred Wolverine.

So fans worrying that Fox is merely misinterpreting what made DEADPOOL so successful, fret not. It looks like that may have been nothing but bad timing. After working with the character for fifteen years, it would make sense that Fox would have a good idea of what we love about good ol’ Logan. Here’s hoping that Wolverine’s last outing will be his greatest.

THE WOLVERINE III is slated for release on March 3, 2017.
