Thor: Ragnarok Thunders Past $500 Million Worldwide At The Box Office

Thor: Ragnarok has been making a splash worldwide over the past couple weeks, and now the superhero flick from Marvel Studios has officially passed $500 million worldwide, SuperHeroHype reports.

This makes Thor: Ragnarok the 12th consecutive Marvel Studios film to cross this threshold, and the 14th one in the MCU as a whole (with the only remaining films being Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, and The Incredible Hulk). Given the long track record the studio has with breaking half a billion dollars, this may not seem like a huge deal, but it is in the context of the Thor franchise.

As stated above, the first Thor didn’t even break $500 million, and while the second film, Thor: The Dark World managed to reach that milestone, it petered out at around $644 million. It was still a success, but for a second film in a Marvel franchise (especially on the heels of The Avengers and Iron Man 3’s mammoth successes), it was something of a disappointment.

With the new, fun tone of Thor: Ragnarok, as well as the huge changes made to the landscape of Thor’s mythology, they’re certainly wiping the slate clean and making way for more mainstream audiences to enjoy. We’re happy to see that it’s a strategy that’s working out for them.
