Tim Burton in No Rush to Make ‘BEETLEJUICE’ Sequel

It seems like BEETLEJUICE fans need not worry about an unnecessary sequel to the beloved film. Despite the frequent rumors regarding the flick, it sounds like director Tim Burton is in no real rush to get a BEETLEJUICE 2 film underway — though that’s not to say a sequel will never happen. In a recent interview with Collider, the director gave what will likely be the definitive answer for the foreseeable future on when we’ll be getting a BEETLEJUICE 2.

Here’s what Burton had to say:

“This is the thing, it’s something that I’m interested in, but there’s so many stories [online], dumping Michael Keaton for Johnny Depp and this or that, and I’ve talked to these people and they didn’t wanna hear this so they just made up a story. But the fact of it is I have talked to Michael and I have talked to Winona, I’ve talked to a few people. It’s something that I really would like to do in the right circumstances, but it’s one of those films where it has to be right. It’s not a kind of a movie that cries out [for a sequel] (laughs), it’s not the BEETLEJUICE trilogy. So it’s something that if the elements are right—because I do love the character and Michael’s amazing as that character, so yeah we’ll see. But there’s nothing concrete yet.”

A BEETLEJUICE sequel is something that’s been discussed by fans ever since the original film came out decades ago. Like many projects in Hollywood, this film is one that seemed to wallow in development hell, but it turns out that this is all be design by Tim Burton. Given how precious the original film is to fans and filmmakers alike, it’s incredibly refreshing that he wants to make sure the circumstances are completely right before he commits to it.

Of course, it’s not as though Tim Burton is sitting idly by these days. Despite his inconsistent recent track record of films, he still manages to make big hits with mainstream audiences — and given his tendency to bring in some serious coin, he also manages to be in demand at big studios. Most recently, he produced the upcoming ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS and directed MISS PEREGRINE’S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN, both of which are due out later this year. Perhaps most notably is the fact that he’s also signed on to direct a live-action DUMBO film for Disney, adding to their long list of animated films  gone live-action.

Needless to say, Burton already has his plate quite full without another BEETLEJUICE film on the horizon.

Tim Burton’s next film, MISS PEREGRINE’S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN hits U.S. theaters on September 30, 2016.
