Most of us were thrilled in 2015 when Mad Max: Fury Road was released, giving us a further look into George Miller's post-apocalyptic world where Max Rockatansky, the protagonist played by Tom Hardy, is attempting to help Imperator Furiosa, played by Charlize Theron, free the harem of sex slaves from the villain Immortan Joe. The critics liked it as well, as the filmed garnered 6 Oscar wins and was nominated for 4 more, including Best Picture.
For awhile now we have wondered about the working title Mad Max: The Wasteland and the future of the franchise with Tom Hardy. Collider's Christina Radish was able to pick his brain as she sat down with Tom Hardy and was able to ask him some questions about his hopefully upcoming role. She starts with his excitement level about the next film of the series, and Hardy replies:
"I’m anxiously waiting to find out. There’s mythology to do with Mad Max that spans copious amounts of tales. What’s wonderful about George [Miller] is that he’s created sagas for Max and sagas for Furiosa, so it’s what he chooses to focus in on. I’m really just waiting for the call like, 'All right, let’s get the leathers on and get back out there and do some more.' It’s there. I’m just waiting for it and looking forward to it."
In the aftermath of the interview, Hardy does confirm he has signed on for three films, and that The Wasteland may not be the actual title. (I hope it is, as the title rocks, but Miller has said that it will not be called that).
"Yeah, as far as I’ve signed to do three of them. It’s a question of when. I’m not sure it’s called Wasteland or not ‘cause you never know. These titles change all the time. But, there’s definitely another Mad Max project pending."
At least Hardy and Miller get along well, as opposed to another Miller, Tim, and the relationship he has with a certain chimichanga eating character played by Ryan Reynolds. Hardy comments on just why he is excited to return.
"I love working with George [Miller] and the fact that his mythology is so deep. It’s a joy to work with an artist and somebody who has the ability to be a movie maker, as well. It’s the full package, isn’t it?"
The full package indeed. Well at least we know that he is signed on for a trilogy, and I will be interested to see where Miller takes the epic.
Are you happy that we have at least two more Mad Max movies incoming? Did you like Fury Road as much as I did? Who would be a good cast for the next antagonist in the series?
