Oh, hey! Remember that Tomb Raider film that hit back in 2018? Personally, I found it to be an enjoyable, if not predictable, adventure romp — one that was actually better than it really needed to be. However, with it taking in only $275 million worldwide, the Roar Uthaug-directed flick seemed like it’d be the only one to get made in this era of filmmaking, with MGM likely turning to more profitable ventures.

Looks like I was dead wrong on that count, and I’m actually pretty thrilled. According to Deadline, MGM has hired Free Fire and High-Rise’s Ben Wheatley to take on this video game sequel, with star Alicia Vikander set to reprise her role as Lara Croft.

Needless to say, I’m a bit surprised here in regards to Wheatley’s hiring. If you’ve seen any of his movies, you’ll know that they tend to be laced with serious, dark cynicism and the occasional hyperviolence. Given MGM’s desire for Tomb Raider to be a mainstream action flick, it’s hard to imagine him holding back to create something palatable to most audiences.

Then again, there have been indications in the past of him potentially signing on to Marvel films, so who knows, right? Without a doubt, he’s got the chops to make it happen, and maybe if his darker side combines with the more adventuring spirit of the last Tomb Raider film, we can get something audiences will be more hungry to see.
