Most everyone has had a co-worker they didn’t get along with or just plain out couldn’t stand to be around. According to THR, while appearing on Norm MacDonald Live, actor Jim Carrey told a story about working with Tommy Lee Jones on Batman Forever, and how it was Tommy Lee Jones who wasn’t too fond of him, as Carrey explains below:

“The maitre said, ‘Oh, I hear you’re working with Tommy Lee Jones. He’s over in the corner having dinner.’ I went over and I said, ‘Hey Tommy, how are you doing?’ and the blood just drained from his face. And he got up shaking  — he must have been in mid kill me fantasy or something like that. And he went to hug me and he said, ‘I hate you. I really don’t like you.’ And I said, ‘What’s the problem?’ and pulled up a chair, which probably wasn’t smart. And he said, ‘I cannot sanction your buffoonery.'”

Wow, that is a pretty intense exchange. Jones didn’t try to hide his disdain for Carrey’s “buffonery” at all. I imagine at the time, with Jones being a Hollywood veteran, some of Carrey’s roles, when compared to some of Jones’, may have come off as silly, but to be flat out rude to someone like this is some heavy handed dislike.

Carrey speculated as to why Jones didn’t like him, “I was the star and that was the problem. He’s a phenomenal actor, though. I still love him.”

It appears this road of respect is a one-way street.

Carrey’s got a point. That movie came out at the height of his career- shortly after Ace Ventura and The Mask. I’m sure a lot of “serious” actors had their panties in a bunch about his buffoonery…

TLJ knew he would be working with Jim Carrey on this. Robin Williams was attached for a very long time, and I never saw Tommy Lee Jones attached until after Jim Carrey replaced Robin Williams. Basically every name on this film slowly changed from the director on down.. over a year. It sounds like the buffoon character was switched based on how each behaved in that story. Still believe little of what I hear these days.

I think there are a few key pieces missing here. People don’t usually tell you they hate you because they dislike your acting. Maybe Carrey was hamming it up and burning takes. Maybe he crossed a line somewhere in there.

I also suspect Jones was having private life issues as his career was taking off and he would divorce nine months after Batman Forever came out.

I imagine everyone hates working with Tommy Lee Jones.

I worked at a Blockbuster years ago and he happened to come in one night to rent a movie while I was working. He was the snarliest person I’ve ever met. Just a grade A asshole who yelled at anyone he came in contact with.

    • Nay sayer!

My friend who works for a production company said the same thing. He’s a complete asshole

  • J’Accuse

Why was Tommy’s bad side purple?

  • Ghost2020

I disliked watching both of them in that movie, it was physically painful.

TLJ doesn’t look like a happy man. Carrey a fruit cake as well, I can’t imagine being in a close relationship to Jenny McCarthy doesn’t have it’s side-effects.

Like that meme…. “Tommy Lee Jones always looks like his son just told him he wants to ride unicycles professionally.”

I had heard another story where TLJ was such a dick to Carrey on-set that once Carrey “accidentally” nailed TLJ in the crotch while spinning his Riddler-staff. That may have just been a revisionist fantasy on Carrey’s part, though.

Jones isn’t exactly known for being warm and friendly in general.

TLJ often reminds me of late Walter Matthau. I truly enjoy(ed) both guys’ acting. Carrey? Never liked his kind of humour. He reminded me of a bad copy of Jerry Lewis.

    Sound like method acting lol
