The Transformers franchise is a lot of things. It’s big, loud, explosive, great-looking, and shiny, but no one would ever accuse the franchise of having an engaging story. From almost day one, the films have been criticized for being shallow, over-bloated, boring, and overly-grim, but no matter what the critics say, there is no denying the money each film makes. Even the most recent one, Transformers: Age of Extinction — which is widely considered the worst of the bunch — cracked $1 billion at the box office.
But despite the success that the franchise has been financially, even Michael Bay admits that the previous film was the weakest of the bunch. Speaking with Empire, the director discusses why he felt that film wasn’t the greatest, and how Transformers: The Last Knight will differ.
“[Age Of Extinction, was] kind of an outlier. Because of losing Shia and just figuring out where we were gonna go. It was testing the waters a little bit. This gets us back in the groove.â€
Admittedly, it’s a bit difficult to take Bay at his word here. While there is no mistaking his visual talents, he has the last three Transformers movies working against him. In my eyes, they were below sub-par, and by saying he only sees a problem with the last one, it seems to ignore the problems the other movies have had.
That being said, this is the first movie to come from the Paramount writers’ room we heard so much about, and I’d like to think that something good came out of that. For all we know this could actually usher in a whole new era of Transformers, but until I see it, I’ll have a hard time believing.
What do you think of Bay’s comments? Do you believe him, or have you already lost faith in this franchise? Let us know in the comments down below!
Transformers: The Last Knight hits theaters on June 21, 2017.
