Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is a series that’s much better than it deserves to be. It’s a comedy about a girl who spent many years kidnapped in a bunker, and as a result, it had the potential to wallow in lowbrow mediocrity for the duration of its run. However, with Tina Fey and Robert Carlock behind the scenes, it’s a show that’s risen above its destiny. Rather than rely on cheap, stupid jokes, it made pains to actually grow the characters in meaningful ways.
Titus Andromedon, a gay stereotype in many ways, is in the midst of a relationship with a construction worker who has just learned of his own sexuality, and Kimmy herself is constantly dealing with the PTSD-esque effects of her time in the bunker. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt takes the pains to actually deal with the issues of its lead characters, and if this trailer for Season 3 is any indication, it continues that trend.
Check it out below!
As you can see, both Titus and Kimmy will continue to grow in meaningful ways in this season. Kimmy will learn what it’s like to be a college student (along with her former employer’s daughter Xanthippe Vorhees), and Titus will continue with this struggles as an unemployed actor in New York City.
Beneath all the stupid and ridiculous jokes is a pretty compelling throughline of psychological proportions (my partner is a psychologist, so we really appreciate that aspect), so if you have yet to jump on board the train that is Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, I recommend you do so now!
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Season 3 hits Netflix on May 19, 2017!
