With Furious 7, director James Wan showed the industry that he can do much more than horror movies. The action-packed blockbuster has been a huge hit for Universal and it looks like other studios have taken note of the fact that Wan can create thrills as easily as he can create chills. The filmmaker, once known almost-entirely as a horror guru thanks to hits like Saw, Insidious, and The Conjuring, is now being courted to take on the sci-fi action epic Robotech.
Sony wants Wan to be at the helm of the project, which is being produced by Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton. But they may have to wait in line, because Wan not only has The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist on deck, but he’s being courted by Warner Bros to direct Aquaman and by Universal to return for Fast & Furious 8.
This all comes from The Hollywood Reporter, who also claim that Warner Bros and Sony are willing to wait for their turn on the Wan gravy train, since Aquaman and Robotech still need considerable development time.
Robotech will be based on the 1980s anime cartoon series that featured heroes engaging in mech battles. Sony is likely hoping this can become a Transformers-esque success for them.
