It’s been a long road to get to this point in the Planet of the Apes franchise. Back in the late-2000s, when it was announced that Fox would be returning to this beloved series, it wasn’t met with a whole lot of enthusiasm. I mean, did we really need to know how the planet got overrun with apes? It was one of those things that seems to fare better in our imaginations than on celluloid. Right?
Well, call me stupid, because I couldn’t have been more wrong. Rise of the Planet of the Apes was a thoughtful little story, and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was a fittingly Shakespearean evolution of the tale. In fact, so good was the latter film that it went down as one of my favorite films of the year. Needless to say, fans have been eagerly awaiting the conclusion to this trilogy with War for the Planet of the Apes.
So far we’ve had a couple trailers for this upcoming threequel, and now, we have the final trailer before the film hits in July!
Check it out below!
On the whole, the trailer did a solid job of selling the film, but I’d be lying if I said it was my favorite. More than the other two, this one seemed more focus on the action — and why not? We’ve already had other stories to focus on the more emotional, character-driven side of things, so why not have one that focuses on the action? Generally with these films, that’s a definite trend in marketing. As the opening day draws closer, the marketing tends to focus more on the action-heavy stuff that larger audiences would be drawn to. This is no exception, and while I hold nothing against them for doing this, it didn’t personally resonate with me as much as I wanted it to. Will the movie be great? I think so, but this wasn’t the trailer to convince me of that.
