Wonder Woman Crosses $400 Million In North America

Warner Brothers Picture’s Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins and starring Gal Gadot, continue to defy early box office expectations. It has done so well in fact that a sequel as already been announced for December 13, 2019. The film will presumably have Patty Jenkins back at the helm and of course Gal Gadot as Diana. Yesterday, Wonder Woman crossed yet another milestone.

According to The Hollywood Reporter Wonder Woman has passed the $400 million dollar mark at the domestic box office. To date domestically it stands as the number two film of the year only behind another female led film Disney’s Beauty and the Beast which stands at $504 million. It is interesting to note that it did not do as well overseas as it is currently the fifth best title of the year. Behind Beauty and the Beast, $1.26 billion, The Fate of the Furious, $1.24 billion, Despicable Me 3, $881.5 million and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 at $861.4 million.

Wonder Woman has broken a number of records since debuting in June, including becoming the top grossing live action film of all time that is directed by a female. It has had the best hold of any superhero film since Sony’s 2002 Spider-Man. Speaking of Spider-Man it currently holds the number seven spot on the chart of superhero films, which Wonder Woman can pass if it can make $403.7 million grossed. The record is held by Marvel’s Avengers at $623.4 million followed by The Dark Knight at $534.9 million.

As far as how it did for Warner Brothers Pictures, it’s their third biggest movie behind The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. President of worldwide marketing and distribution at Warner Brothers Sue Kroll had this to say about Wonder Woman’s success:

“When Wonder Woman opened to such a terrific number in June, we thought, ‘This is truly a moment’ — for the film, for our industry, for director Patty Jenkins and, of course, for Gal Gadot. Now, more than two months later, Wonder Woman has become a phenomenon, the must-see movie of the summer. Audiences have embraced this character and her story in such a spectacular fashion, and we couldn’t be happier for everyone involved in bringing this incredible property to life and to cinemas across the country.”

Who would have thought that Wonder Woman would have been the hero to start to put the DCEU back on track. Now we turn our attention to Justice League and see if the lessons learned from Wonder Woman can be applied to the films going forward. Are you surprised by Wonder Woman’s success?

Justice League opens November 17, 2017.
