Despite some of the negative narrative surrounding the DC Extended Universe since the release of Batman v Superman, there’s an awful lot of stuff coming down the pipe for fans in 2017. Sure, both The Batman and The Flash seem to have an unending amount of trouble in their development stages, but we still have two near-finished films to look forward to. Just because certain productions of the franchise have had some real trouble doesn’t necessarily mean we can expect the upcoming Wonder Woman and Justice League movies to be duds.
Thus far, we’ve seen a lot more of Wonder Woman than Justice League — as one would expect, given its earlier release. With two trailers under its belt, we seem to have a good idea of the tone we’ll be getting, and the general story. What the trailers haven’t revealed, however, is the big villain of the movie. Who will Wonder Woman be facing off against in this inaugural movie of hers?
Last month, in a feature in Studio Ciné Live, it was revealed that the big bad in Wonder Woman would be none other than the god of war, Ares (though this code was cracked on the DL by Joblo months prior). Here’s what the feature had to say about the film’s plot, and the villain’s role in it:
“Behind these scientific formulas, there is a deadly gas that could well annihilate humanity. Now, it turns out that this is precisely the goal of Ares, the god of war. He is jealous of humanity, which is a creation of his father, the deceased Zeus (he was killed by Ares when he rebelled against him, with the help of the Amazons)â€
But, of course, this is just his overall big plan…but what will he look like, and who is he played by? Thanks to Batman-News and Seán Murphy, editor-in-chief of SMTV Reports, we have both of those answers!
In regards to his look (or at least his potential final form), Murphy tweeted out the following photo at a Toy Fair
While the actual details surrounding this villain are still very much in the air, a recent screening has revealed a few key details. First off, Ares will be brought to life using a mix of CG and practical elements, and second off, he’ll be played by none other than David Thewlis, who many fans may remember as Professor Lupin from the Harry Potter films.
As stated above, we haven’t seen Ares’ presence in any of the trailers. Perhaps DC and Warner are still gun shy after spoiling the third act of Batman v Superman in one of its trailers. Either way, this is the big bad guy to look forward to come this June. What do you think? Is this the guy you wanted to see Wonder Woman take on? Let us know in the comments down below!
