This year saw Hugh Jackman hang up his claws for what is presumably the final time in the hard-R film, Logan. It was a retirement that was a long time coming, but even to this day, some fans are hopeful that Jackman will one day return to play the character once again.

During the press run for Logan, Jackman had left open one potential door. Should the X-Men somehow get incorporated into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it may very well be enough to bring him back. In recent weeks, there’s been rumblings of Disney buying out most of 21st Century Fox, and with it the rights to make X-Men films.

With this in mind, would Jackman actually be willing to return? Here’s what the actor had to say to Collider while promoting his latest film, The Greatest Showman:

“It’s interesting because for the whole 17 years I kept thinking that would be so great, like I would love to see, particularly, Iron Man and the Hulk and Wolverine together. And every time I saw an Avengers movie I could just see Wolverine in the middle of all of them like punching them all on the head. But it was like, ‘Oh well, that’s not gonna happen,’ and it was interesting just when I first saw that headline — it was just the possibility of it and who knows what’s gonna happen, obviously — I was like, ‘Hang on!’ But I think, unfortunately, the ship has sailed for me, but for someone else I would like to see Wolverine in there.”

I think he has a point here. As they did with Spider-Man before him, there’s a good chance that Marvel Studios would prefer to start from scratch with their own interpretations. It would certainly make for a timeline that made a whole lot more sense, and would allow us not to wonder what in the hell the mutants had been up to over the past several decades.

Would you like to see Jackman return as Wolverine, or should Marvel Studios just recast if they end up with the rights? Or should they leave the X-Men alone altogether? Let us know your thoughts down below!

Yeah no way he’s coming back.. did I love him as Wolverine? Yes. But do I want to see him in the MCU? Eh, not really.

Now that I think about it, I would much rather prefer a new Wolvie. At first, like Hugh, I thought it would be cool to get him in there but after reading this article it donned on me, that wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense. It’d just be shoehorned. I’d rather have an organic story…

Also make him short again please.

Without question, as much as I liked Jackman as Wolverine, the MCU should 100% reboot the character to make him more like the source material — short and angry and part of a team actually led by cyclops, Storm, etc. I don’t think I can take more origin narrative and should focus on what makes the Xmen great, and not who has the most star power. If there is one thing Marvel does above all else, is honor the spirit of the source material (doesn’t mean following the narratives the same way) and Marvel should do the same here.

Would love to see it, but sadly I think he’s right that the time has passed. Had we been talking about this 5-6 years ago, I think it would have worked wonderfully.

Meanwhile, it raises the question as to what it will look like when/if they do introduce the mutants to the MCU.

best idea would be, Guardians of the Galaxy run into the Shi’Ar empire and find 1970s XMen there waiting

yeh it’d be a wild scene if a third of way through avengers 4, stark and co. after getting beaten soundly by thanos and his minions says something like “we need some help…” and from out of the smoke and ruin logan, iceman, cyclops, jean, prof. x and magneto appear.

There’s a lot of sentiment to do Wolverine right and make him the short, swarthy, little beast of a guy that he is in the comic books and I want to be right up front in saying that I’m not only “just fine” with that but that I’d actually like to see that done. Having said that I really do wonder if Hugh Jackman’s 6 foot 2 inch tall “Leading Man” version of the character might be kind of locked in by movie audiences. How would the wider public respond to an accurate portrayal of Wolverine after 17 years and 8 films it should be something Marvel considers if this all does come to pass and they reboot the character (like I’m sure they will).

If they introduced him in character, in the outfit, as Wolverine first and Logan second, I think it could work just fine…

I think the possibility of Hugh Jackman returning as Wolverine to the MCU has almost nothing to do with the actor and everything to do with Marvel accepting the existing X-Men films as canon in the MCU.

  • Madcap2112

Recast. The X-Men movies are a mess.

  • Neil Pye

Logan was his retirement movie from the Wolverine character. If they do finally bring Wolverine into the MCU he should be recast. And he better be fighting with the Hulk, just sayin.

  • Victor Roa

you know what this about….. merchandising.

    Two words, Patton Oswalt!
