Hmm, one of these things is not like the others.
In a move that is both head-scratchingly random and possibly total genius, Ice Cube is about to help Disney produce a modern-day take on Oliver! The musical adaptation of the classic Charles Dickens novel "Oliver Twist" has been a hit for ages with constant revivals of the stage play. Now, according to a new report, an adaptation of the classic Oliver Twist story is going to come to the big screen with an appealing new twist:
The updated take on Oliver Twist is going to be given the Hamilton treatment.
For those unaware, Lin-Manuel Miranda's reworking of the real-life story of Alexander Hamilton- one of our nation's Founding Fathers- has been a phenomenon. The show, while set very much in the period that Hamilton actually lived in, features music and lingo that is as current and as brash as anything else you'll see out there. Miranda, and director Thomas Kail, managed to retell the story of Hamilton with a fresh voice- devoid of the starchy "old english" linguistic trappings and stuffy Broadway ballads one might assume go hand-in-hand with a biographical period piece.
According to The Hollywood Reporter Disney has tapped Kail to direct this new Oliver Twist, while Cube and his Cube Vision shingle will co-produce. Cube is also helping write the treatment for the film, alongside Jeff Kwatinetz.
The original tale tells the story of an orphan boy in London, who winds up crossing paths with an influential figure named Fagin that lures him into a world of pickpockets, murder, hardships, and secrets.
This won't be Disney's first crack at Oliver Twist, as they already made an animated feature called Oliver and Company back in 1988. This new one will definitely take the story to new and different places.
For starters, similar to Hamilton, the movie is said to be very modern, bringing in genres of music that include hip-hop. Cube is also set to play Fagin.
This could be interesting, folks.
