Next year, audiences will have a chance to see the Dark Phoenix saga adapted to the big screen for the second time. The first time, as fans may recall, was the infamous X-Men: The Last Stand, which had the Dark Phoenix aspect make up only one portion of the entire plot.

This time around, as indicated by the title of the film, Dark Phoenix will be its bread and butter. But how will Jean Grey actually have her Phoenix abilities unlocked?

In a recent piece from EW, it is revealed that at the beginning of the film, the X-Men team will head into space. In the sequence, the time will be sent on a rescue mission. However, things go awry when their X-Jet is hit by a solar flare. Luckily, Jean is able to save the team, but the solar flare unlocks her Phoenix abilities and…well, we kind of have an idea of how things go.

For me, the big reveal here isn’t how her abilities are unlocked, but it’s the confirmation of concerns from fans. One of the biggest criticisms of the upcoming film is that audiences haven’t had a chance to fall in love with the X-Men team yet. Had we had one more film to do so before Dark Phoenix, this would bring more gravity with it.

However, as it stands, it doesn’t seem like the beginning of the film will offer any more bonding time, and that they’ll get things going fairly quickly. Let’s hope they’ll find a way to get us to care throughout the film.

I’ll take it, I didn’t see Age of Apocalypse, I hear she has it full on Phoenix Force…… but I’ll take this instead, at least we get the whole “I have to survive holding onto the plane” hair falls out, she’s begging to live,

When you see Age of Apocalypse you will want this movie to be cancelled before production starts.

I heard it’s bad, but so was X3…… at what point is the bottom? I felt XMen Origins Wolverine was closer to a Rob Liefeld comic than Deadpool.

I just assumed she would get her powers by buying loot crates.

      So much pride and accomplishment.

So, no Hellfire Club and Victorian Dominatrix outfit? Awwww.

Awe, and I was hoping that it was going to be her and Mystique go off to train together and Mystique unlocks her powers.
Who wants to be that when they fight the big bad Jean will pass on her powers to Mystique.

The movies should stick to the source material. The Phoenix is a separate entity and is not inherently part of Jean Grey. It makes no sense that they are not sticking to the source material.
