Coming up on 20th Century Fox’s Marvel slate next year is the long-awaited X-Men: Dark Phoenix, from director Simon Kinberg.
This film is set to be an adaptation of the beloved Dark Phoenix Saga from the comics, wherein Jean Grey goes absolutely berserk. It’s an arc that was loosely adapted in the terrible movie, X-Men: The Last Stand, and since then, Kinberg has expressed his desire to go back and make things right with this latest film.
Now, EW has a new cover that shows off Jean Grey herself, Sophie Turner, up in flames. Check out the cover below:

Not a bad look for Jean Grey. Of course, the look is one thing, and the actual execution is another thing completely. Is this a film that can actually nail the storyline that X-Men: The Last Stand stumbled with? Unlike the previous film, this upcoming one does have the advantage of focusing solely on Dark Phoenix, whereas that aspect was only one part of a bigger story in The Last Stand.
One big potential problem here is that this is also a storyline that can feel rushed. Part of the appeal of the storyline in general was the “loss” of a beloved character. In these films, however, we’ve only seen this take of the X-Men youngsters in one mediocre film. Will we simply not care when things go bad? We’ll have to wait and see.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix hits theaters on November 2, 2018.
