The X-Men franchise has certainly become a unique beast in the world of cinematic universes. Not only do they tend to plan their films in smaller batches — with actors generally signing up for three or so at a time, as opposed to Marvel’s “sell your soul for eternity” deal that’s become the standard — but they also have the added layer of difficulty in their multiple timelines and their willingness to hop from one time period to another.
All of a sudden, it’s no longer as clear cut as, “oh, we need this actor for the next one,” because the next one may not even be a true sequel — and to top it all off, it may not even be set in the same actual universe. As such, we never truly know what actors’ roles could be in upcoming films. However, a couple week’s back, it was pretty much confirmed that the next X-Men film, rumored to be titled Supernova, would follow the events in X-Men: Apocalypse, and would chronicle the infamous Dark Phoenix saga, which sees Jean Grey become corrupted by her own abilities.
Here is the synopsis as released by My Entertainment World:
"Gathered together by Professor Charles Xavier to protect a world that fears and hates them, the X-Men had fought many battles, been on adventures that spanned galaxies, grappled enemies of limitless might, but none of this could prepare them for the most shocking struggle they would ever face. One of their own members, Jean Grey, has gained power beyond all comprehension, and that power has corrupted her absolutely! Now they must decide if the life of the woman they cherish is worth the existence of the entire universe!"
Sounds to us that in order to make this story happen, we need the help of one Professor Charles Xavier — namely the younger version, played by James McAvoy. However, considering his, Michael Fassbender’s, and Jennifer Lawrence’s contracts were fulfilled upon the release of last year’s X-Men: Apocalypse. Would 20th Century Fox be able to lock down any of the cast for future films, including X-Men: Supernova?
On Monday, McAvoy posted a couple photos on Instagram, one of which shows the older Professor X, Patrick Stewart along with franchise producer Simon Kinberg. The second photo shows Kinberg with McAvoy himself. The caption for the post read as follows:
“Dinner last night with the man who's in a multi generational three way relationship with two professors.thanks for dinner @simondavidkinberg and @hutch.parker ,I can't wait for the summer.”
Interesting post there. While we can only speculate, it certainly seems like they’re closing a deal for McAvoy. Could they begin filming as soon as this summer? Finally, would Stewart actually play a role in this film? Given that the actor recently stated that he wasn’t ready to call it quits on X-Men yet, it’s very possible.
This all also makes us wonder just what in the world is happening with Josh Boone’s The New Mutants film.
What do you think of all this? Can we expect both McAvoy and Stewart to return in the next X-Men film?
