Zendaya Once Again Refutes Claim She Is Mary Jane Watson In Spider-Man: Homecoming

Much can be said for us genre fans. Probably at the top of the list for some would be the fact that we’re a stubborn bunch. When we get a notion in our heads, we don’t let that go, much like a two year old throwing a fit in a store because their parent won’t buy them some candy.

MTV News is reporting that once again, Zendaya has come out denying that she’s playing Mary Jane Watson in Spider-Man: Homecoming. We don’t know much about her character in the movie as yet, apart from scene stealing glimpses in the trailers released for the film and that her character is named Michelle.

“My character is 100 percent Michelle,” she told MTV News correspondents Gaby Wilson and Josh Horowitz at the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards. “That’s her name. I promise you I’m not lying.”

Zendaya went on to describe Michelle as “weird and interesting and cool,” a character who “says weird things at the wrong times.” Her dry and awkward sense of humor is exactly why the actress thinks people will like Michelle as a character. “She’s like my spirit animal,” she said. “[She’s] how I feel on the inside.”

While it wouldn’t be the first time a movie studio used misdirection to throw off fans, Marvel Studios and Sony have a lot they need to accomplish with Spider-Man: Homecoming. It makes sense that Peter Parker’s love interest in the movie is Liz Allan since they’re relaunching the films with Peter in high school. From issue one of the comics, Liz was Peter’s first love interest. From there, his interest moved to Gwen Stacy and finally Mary Jane Watson herself, who’s debut in the comics was a classic. While I would expect to see MJ show up in the new series at some point, it makes no sense for her to make an appearance this early in the reboot.

Zendaya was a highlight of the Spider-Man: Homecoming trailers. I dug the Ally Sheedy, Breakfast Club vibe they appear to be giving her character. The verbal zings she sends Peter and Ned’s way in the first trailer was hilarious. In the scene released just the other day, the way she pretends to grill Peter before laughing it off and telling him she doesn’t care was funny as well. I’m looking forward to her role in the new movie, no matter what it is.

So what do you think? Are you still on the fence as to whether she may be Mary Jane Watson or are you satisfied she’s a new character? What have you thought about the trailers to Spider-Man: Homecoming so far? Sound off in the comments section below.
