Remember back when Sonic was the cool, edgy version of Mario? Back when his games were good and Sega could do no wrong? Well, the blue blur has seen better days since then. His games are selling less and less with each release, and even worse, the quality seems only to diminish even more with each iteration.
But you’re not here to hear about my gripes with old-school video game mascot characters, are you? Well, word has it that Sonic may be hitting the big screen soon. In a recent interview with The World Folio, Sega Sammy Holdings Inc. President and CEO Hajime Satomi said the company was working on a film featuring the world-famous character.
“Sega Sammy Group is currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live-action and animation hybrid SONIC THE HEDGEHOG movie scheduled for release in 2018. Like with this CG animation production, we would like to expand our business into other entertainment areas beyond what we are currently involved.”
While Satomi says live-action/animation hybrid, I tend to believe it will largely be live-action, á la TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES or ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS. That being said, Satomi could mean perhaps a single live-action character in a completely animated world, like, say, SPACE JAM? The former mentioned idea seems to me to the be the real way to go, but we’ll have to wait and see what they come up with. Regardless of what idea they come up with, they’d be wise to get it out by their 2018 release date.
Sonic is a character that’s been losing grip with gamers, and while he’s still recognized by a great many people, he’s not what one would call a huge draw. Either way, until we start to see some red flags, I’ll remain optimistic.
Until then, I’ll just rewatch the opening from the 90s Sonic cartoon.
