With the Indonesian film “The Raid” receiving good word of mouth, Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group pre-bought the English and Spanish rights to the sequel for the United States and Latin American markets.

The sequel, tentatively titled “Berandal” for the Indonesian market, will begin production at the end of this year in Jakarta. The original film’s star Iko Uwais will reprise his role with Gareth Hew Evans set to direct.

According to Deadline, the sequel will have a significantly larger budget and the storyline is currently kept under wraps.

The first film is about a police SWAT team sent to raid a safe house of a drug lord.

“The Raid” won the Midnight Madness Award last year at the Toronto International Film Festival. It will be screened at the upcoming SXSW Film Festival.  The film will be released by Sony Pictures Classics on March 23rd in theaters and Screen Gems is planning for an English-language remake.
