In MMC Joule Filmsâ€™ â€œHide Away,â€ it a somber tale of a man who sets out on a spiritual personal recovery by purchasing a dilapidated boat.
Veteran actor Josh Lucas plays the successful businessman referred as â€œThe Young Marinerâ€ who buys the boat, Hesperus, as his personal escape.
During the course of his hide away, his interactions with â€œThe Waitressâ€ (played by Ayelet Zurer) and â€œThe Ancient Marinerâ€ (played by James Cromwell) offer certain guidance with the boat towards its glory days.
The boat is a metaphor for the businessmanâ€™s wrecked life. In the beginning of the film, the boat is in disarray with non-working machinery and trash everywhere. It is up to the young mariner to obtain all the pieces together to put the boat and his life back on track.
His personal journey with this boat is a difficult one as the problems seem unsolvable and any person would just simply give up. As he struggles between his personal loss and the challenges of the boatâ€”one could feel the torment he is going through.
And the film keeps the audiences feeling the depression and struggles through the film until the end.
Peter Vanderwallâ€™s script as a spiritual drama is a good poetic gesture about oneâ€™s struggles and coping mechanism. However, the lack of dialogue may seem that the movie is excruciating long and makes one wonder when his spiritual quest may be over. I know the healing process for any depression is a slow one, but donâ€™t make the audiences feel the same way.
The saving grace for the film is the cinematography. The different sights of the four seasons on the waterfront were eye-pleasing aesthetics. It almost makes me feel I should buy a boat to reside just to experience that kind of life all-year around. Almost.
Over all, the film is in its own metaphor by sailing through rough waters and attempting to maintain the audienceâ€™s attention throughout the film. But if youâ€™re into deep thought full of metaphors and cinematography, then the film could do you no wrong.
â€œHide Awayâ€ will open in theaters on June 1st for select cities, including New York City, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland and Salem, Oregon.
