PoltergeistExhibitor Relations has announced various new release dates for upcoming films. In a couple of cases, it’s a shift from another date, and in another it’s a fresh announcement:

  • “The damn dirty apes will return yet again, as UNTITLED PLANET OF THE APES (not the official title) stakes out 7/29/16.”
  • NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM 3 will arrive a week early, as Fox moves Ben Stiller’s threequel from 12/25/14 to 12/19.”
  • “‘They’re baaaaaack.’ Fox’s POLTERGEIST reboot will haunt theaters 2/13/15.” This move also pushes Fox’s The Longest Ride to 4/3/15.

The Poltergeist release date is notable because it reveals some of the wheeling, dealing, and strategizing that Fox has in mind. The romantic flick, The Longest Ride, based on the book by Nicholas Sparks (The Notebook) was supposed to open that night. It’s a big date night, obviously, because it’s Valentine’s Day weekend. But now that 50 Shades of Grey was moved to that weekend, Fox realizes that it’ll have a hard time competing. So they moved Longest Ride to avoid 50 Shades, and will now be offering up Poltergeist as counter-programming instead.

Which of these films tickles your fancy? Personally, I’m surprised that they’re all ready announcing a release for the next Planet of The Apes film. Something about Rise of The Planet of The Apes must be making them awfully confident. I’ll likely pass on the rest, unless my wife drags me to the Poltergeist remake.
