2019 Will Be Tyler Perry’s Last As Madea

Believe it or not Tyler Perry’s Madea character will be 20 years old in 2019 since her debut in 1999 where she first appeared in the play I Can Do Bad All By Myself. Since then the tough talking grandmother has appeared in dozens of films, plays and has some television appearances. For a while it seemed like Madea was the type of character to always be around, but on Monday Perry announced that he will be retiring the character once in for all.

During an interview on Bevy Smith’s SiriusXM show Bevelations Perry said that, “I’m happy to kill that old bitch, I’m tired, man, I just don’t want to be her age, playing her.” He announced that he will be doing a farwell stage tour in 2019 Tyler Perry’s a Madea Family Funeral to say farewell to his iconic character. Check it out in the clip above.

As for the film, Perry said that his team had finished shooting it two years ago, but held of on it’s release so it could follow the 2016 and 2017 Madea Halloween films. He wanted to focus his attention on other projects he was working on like Acrimony which debuted earlier this year as well as Nobody’s Fool, which will be released on November 2nd. Perry was the writer and director for both films.

The Madea film franchise has made more than $500 million worldwide over 10 films. Perry says that the character was based on his own mother mixed with Eddie Murphy’s performance in Nutty Professor II: The Klumps. This last Madea film will also be the last film Perry collaborates with Lionsgate as he has signed a new deal with Viacom that will have him busy producing content in television, film and short form video platforms.
