20th Century Boys Manga Series Getting Omnibus Editions

This one is pretty much a super-niche little piece of news, but if you’re a fan of manga writer/artist Naoki Urasawa, this is pretty much some golden news. One of the artist’s most acclaimed and renowned series, 20th Century Boys, is getting a bit of a re-release in the U.S.

As VIZ Media has done with many other properties, the sci-fi thriller manga series will be getting several omnibus editions, come this September, the publishing company announced on Wednesday. These volumes will be marketed as 20th Century Boys: The Perfect Edition, with each volume consisting of two standard volumes of the 22-volume manga series. The first omnibus edition, which will include new cover art and select color pages, will feature the first two volumes and will hit bookstores on September 18, 2018.

These volumes will then be published on a quarterly basis.

Additionally, the series originally published the last two volumes under the name 21st Century Boys, and as a result, the final volume of these Perfect Editions will be published as 21st Century Boys: The Perfect Edition. Since it will be comprised of both volumes, this omnibus edition will not have a volume number attached to it.

For those unfamiliar, this is an amazing manga series from a skillful thriller storyteller, and while it does occasionally get bogged down with its length, it still manages to be engaging throughout.

Below is the official synopsis for 20th Century Boys:

“As 20TH CENTURY BOYS begins, humanity, having faced extinction at the end of the 20th century, would not have entered the new millennium if it weren’t for them. In 1969, during their youth, they created a symbol. In 1997, as the coming disaster slowly starts to unfold, that symbol returns. This is the story of a group of boys who try to save the world.”

We’ll try and snag a copy of this volume when it hits and shoot you a review as to whether or not it’s worth it.
