25 Years Later, TMNT Creators Reuniting For New Project

Cowabunga!  After 25 years the original creators of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, are joining forces again for their new project Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin, which will be released in the summer of 2020.  For some this may not seem like a big deal, but for any die hard TMNT fan it is a HUGE deal.

The first comics I ever remember my dad introducing me to were Batman and the original TMNT comics from Eastman and Laird.  I loved the cartoons but would always come back to the four book compilation of some of their original, dark, gritty work.  If you are a TMNT fan and have not checked them out, I would highly recommend you do so, especially since the 1990 TMNT fill took a large amount of its inspiration from them.

So why is this such a big deal?  Well, after years of working together the unexpected success of TMNT put a strain on their friends and they parted ways in 1993. In 2000, Eastman sold his share of the franchise to Laird and Mirage while in 2008 he sold the remaining shares. Then in 2009 Laird sold his shares to Viacom, but was permitted to publish black and white TMNT comics through Mirage. These became few and far between, but Eastman later helped Nickelodeon with some of the cartoons, came on as a co-writer once Viacom licensed the comics to IDW, and helped Paramount with the rebooted films.

Did you get all of that?  What finally brought Eastman and Laird back together was the Netflix documentary, The Toys That Made Us which featured the TMNT franchise. During the episode, the two drew the turtles together as they had so many years ago leading to their new project!
