5 Female Comic Book Characters Ready For A Live-Action Series

Ready for some more female comic book characters to get their time in the TV spotlight? Here’s who we think are ready for the small screen.

In the year 2020, the female-led television series landscape is plentiful. That being said, only in the last decade have female showrunners and writers began breaking into what was traditionally a male-dominated writers’ room. Creators like Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Shonda Rhimes are making amazing shows like Killing Eve and How to Get Away With Murder. These shows and many others are pushing the boundaries of where scripted television traditionally took the female character.

With mainstream success, doors will be opening for genre series about and fronted by female comic book characters. Here are five such characters that are ready for prime time.

WITCHBLADE

The Image Comics character Witchblade already had two seasons of a live-action show on TNT in the early 2000s. With better and cheaper effects available now, the NYPD detective who wields the magical Witchblade against evil feels like it would be right at home at a place like the SYFY channel.

TANK GIRL 

If you’re not old enough to know the 1995 film, Tank Girl is one part Mad Max: Fury Road and two parts Harley Quinn. You then take that combination, strap it into a tank, and give it the 120 count Crayola box. Somebody call HBO Max, because whatever this grows up to be is perfect for their platform.

SHI 

If you caught Shogun world from Westworld Season 2, you know TV is ready for a character like Shi. That type of set design along with unapologetic violence could make creator Billy Tucci’s Japanese warrior a bloody hit worldwide on a streaming service like Netflix.

ALANA (from Saga)

If you’ve not read a couple of volumes of Brian K Vaughan’s Saga, put down that gyro and go find them right now. Alana is an amazing and complex lead character who’s ready for a live adaption. Pair that with the imagery and eclectic world of Saga (Lying Cat!) and you have the next Game of Thrones.

BARONESS

This one I might be most excited about. Season one of the show Killing Eve is probably one of the best things I’ve seen in a while. Just replace the two leads of that show with the G.I. Joe characters Baroness and Scarlett and you can have all my money. The Baroness could be such an interesting character psyche to dive into. Think about it: One of the only female characters in a male-dominated criminal organization bent on world domination? You think the guys in Cobra just gave Baroness respect? Oh no…She probably earned it doing the type of evil things that made some of those same men shudder.
