Alita: Battle Angel is a project that’s been in the works for more years than I can count. But later on this year, it’ll finally be punching its way into theaters. However, given its fairly violent source material, you’d be forgiven for wondering whether or not they’d be willing to go full R. I mean, this is a manga that has people being ripped to shreds. Surely they couldn’t go PG-13, right?
Well, in a world where anime adaptations still haven’t hit it big, the answer’s kind of a big fat no. Unless it’s a HUGE property that has hit with worldwide audiences (and while there are plenty of big properties out there, few actually warrant an R rating), chances are they’re going to hit the PG-13 rating. The same can now be officially said of Alita: Battle Angel, as reported by Exhibitor Relations on their Twitter account.

I’m really glad the Motion Picture Association of America took those eyes into account, because, yeah, those things will haunt us for a long time…at least that’s what I thought. Admittedly, this character has grown on me over the past year or so since we first saw her in action. As far as fully-CG characters go, she’s not half-bad.
In terms of the rating, I can’t say I’m disappointed. While the manga would occasionally get hyper-violent, I can’t say it was the sole selling point of the manga. For the most part, it was actually rather tame and would only get violent on very specific and random instances. So long as they have this kind of stuff happen off screen, it’s not the worst thing ever, right?
