Amazon’s The Lord Of The Rings TV Show Adds New Series Regular In Ema Horvath

Amazon's Lord of the Rings show leaves New Zealand for Britain in Season 2

Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings TV show, is massive in terms of cost, budget and also expectation. Amazon has paid a fortune to secure the rights to tell stories set in Tolkien’s Second Age, something no one else has had the opportunity to do before. Amazon will be hoping this is a massive hit for them and the show has already been renewed for Season 2, before filming has really begun on Season 1.

Amazon is still rounding out the cast before filming begins and Deadline has learned that Ema Horvath (pictured above) has been cast a series regular for the show. There is no detail on who Horvath may be playing, but then we have very little character information whatsoever so far. In fact, about the only character we know for sure must be involved in this and as far as we know is yet to be cast, is Sauron himself. Sauron would more than likely be played by an actor for this show, because he is not yet the CGI terror that we saw in The Lord of the Rings movies. The Second Age ends with the destruction of Numenor, a major location for this new series and until that event, Sauron is able take on any shape he wishes, which means it would not be someone in a mask and suit this time.

Horvath clearly won’t be playing Sauron, so I await that announcement with bated breath (Tom Hiddleston is my dream casting). Who she will be playing, well it could literally be anyone at this point. Horvath previously appeared in Like.Share.Follow, her first movie and has also appeared in the TV show Don’t Look Deeper.

The production for the show will unusually take a 4-5 month hiatus after filming of the first two episodes in order for showrunners and executive producers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay to begin working on scripts for Season 2 now that it has been renewed. Noo real surprise on the early renewal given the investment Amazon has made in this franchise.

I am very excited to see what they can do with this show, which as yet is still untitled and I do not anticipate it being called The Lord of the Rings. I hope we start to find out more about the characters and who is playing who as production commences. Right now it’s hard to guess because we are not sure exactly which point in the thousands of year’s timeline that this story will begin. Any Elves in the story will obviously remain ageless, but the human characters could feasibly go through multiple generations depending on how long this show is supposed to cover.
