During the mid-season finale, The Walking Dead said goodbye to a character that has been part of the show since Season 1, Carl Grimes, played by actor Chandler Riggs. One of the more heartbreaking loses in the show’s history, as fans have watched Carl grow up as the series progressed.

Carl had arguably the roughest childhood ever portrayed on a television show. Actor Andrew Lincoln, who plays Carl’s father Rick Grimes on the show recently spoke with EntertainmentWeekly about the loss of his onscreen son:

“I’m not going to lie to you, that was sad. The beautiful thing is it’s what we rarely do in our show — we actually give the opportunity for a goodbye. It was unusual in that regard. Usually, things happen and people are ripped from you in this world that we inhabit. Thankfully, there was some sense of catharsis on this one, because we got to leave it all out on the screen. I thought Chandler did a remarkable job, as he always has done, but particularly in this episode.”

This was a huge bummer, Carl had been through so much. I, like I assume many fans, thought Carl would make it much closer to the end of the show. I think Carl had become too much of a badass to be taken out by a walker bite, it should have been at the hands of Negan, or another Savior, at least let the kid go out in a blaze of glory.

The Walking Dead returns Sunday, February 25.
