Who would take the shield if Captain America died? That was a huge question in the MCU since Captain America: The Winter Soldier that introduced Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson (aka The Falcon) and expanded on Cap’s best friend Bucky. Well, Captain America doesn’t die in Endgame but he does get really, really old. In a touching scene, Steve Rogers hands the shield and mantle of Captain America to Sam. Sam seems reluctant at first and looks to Bucky who simply nods his approval of the choice. Thanks to an interview with IMDb we have a little insight into how Mackie found out he would be the future Captain America.

“We were at his house and he goes, ‘You excited?’ And I go, ‘What are you talking about?’ and he goes, ‘You don’t know?’ He jumps up, runs out of the room and comes back in with the script. “We cried. We drank. We laughed. I am very happy I got that moment with Chris, for him to not only pass me the shield, but to tell me it was happening.”

Mackie continues to discuss the social implications of him being the new Captain America and what it means to his sons.

“It means a lot to me for my sons to see Captain America as a black dude and for me to be that dude to my sons. So that moment was not just, ‘Hey, we’re acting.’ It was more of a thing. And then they cut and I cried. And Chris cried. And the Russos cried. And everyone cried. It was an emotional day.”

As a huge fan of Ed Brubaker’s run on the comic books that saw Bucky take up the shield, I had wanted that to be the case in these movies. However, I really appreciated the moment between Bucky and Sam in Endgame and I am completely fine for the choice in the MCU. While Bucky has more history with Cap it’s Sam who has been by Cap’s side the most in this franchise. I am excited to see what comes next.
