Aquaman Breaks $100 Million Domestically

I’m very interested to see what the future holds for Aquaman. The film itself has performed fairly well in terms of its reception with critics and fans. It is certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes (meaning a solid majority of critics gave the film a recommendation) and it has an A- CinemaScore (meaning that audiences that were polled really enjoyed it). But despite this, it only made slightly north of $67 million domestically in its opening weekend.

On paper, that seems to be quite the downturn. It is easily the lowest-performing film in the DC Extended Universe — at least, domestically. However, it does seem to be holding on well. According to Forbes, the film has topped $106 million domestically, taking in $11 million on Christmas Eve and $22 million on Christmas day. Admittedly, that still sounds just okay, but then you have to factor in the gangbusters money it’s made overseas, and all of a sudden, the picture looks fairly solid.

The film has since grossed around $550 million, and the outlet predicts that the film could ultimately break $700 million worldwide as it heads into the New Year’s Eve showtimes, which will easily mean it’ll outclass its predecessor, Justice League, which only topped out at $657.9 million worldwide.

All in all, for a film that didn’t cost nearly what Justice League made, this is a huge step up. It may not singlehandedly save the DC Extended Universe, but it does help to turn things in the right directions. A few more moderately successful films and the brand will be reclaimed. Warner Bros. is likely learning an important lesson with these films: there is no magic bullet.
