Aquaman Director James Wan Still Not Signed On For Sequel

Aquaman was kind of a risk for Warner Bros. When it comes to their DC films, in the past, they have largely relied almost solely on the brand power of heavy hitters like Batman and Superman. Additionally, up until actor Jason Momoa was introduced to audiences as Aquaman, the character was seen in the mainstream as something of a joke.

Now, Warner Bros. is relying on the character to help change the narrative surrounding the DC Extended Universe, which only has one film that has been well received by both fans and critics (Wonder Woman). As it stands, the movie is performing admirably with critics, currently sitting at 75% with 81 critics weighing in. It seems to be a solid victory so far, and if this pans out for them, you know the studio will want to lock down helmer James Wan in the future.

But what’s the current status? Variety caught up with the filmmaker, and as it stands, he is not signed on for more than one.

“This is my only that I signed on to do. We’ll see. Let’s not talk about a sequel before this one’s even come out yet.”

The quote may come across as pretty mean, but in the interview itself, he seems good-spirited, albeit a bit nervous. Needless to say there’s a lot riding on this for Warner Bros. (though at this point, the studio needs Wan a lot more than Wan needs them).

Will this film replicate the success that Wonder Woman enjoyed? We all know that did amazing business and Patty Jenkins went onto sign on for the sequel, Wonder Woman 1984. Will lightning strike again for perhaps the most unexpected hero?

We’ll have to wait and see. Do you think Wan will be back for a second film? Hell, do you expect a second film will even happen? Let us know your thoughts down below!

Aquaman hits theaters on December 21, 2019.
