Aquaman Is Also An Origin Story For Black Manta, Says Director James Wan

Have you guys heard about this Aquaman movie coming out in December?

The James Wan-directed film will bring one of the more ridiculed superheroes to the big screen for his own solo film. Wan recently spoke with Fandango about the character of Black Manta, who, according to Wan, the film is also an origin story for.

“That’s our intro into Black Manta before he’s Black Manta. It’s an Aquaman origin story, but it’s also a Black Manta origin story as well. That’s one thing I’ve wanted to make clear, because everyone seems to think that Black Manta is the main villain in this. He’s not. He’s not. It’s his origin, so it’s how he ultimately becomes Black Manta, right? Arthur’s real antagonist in this movie is his half-brother, King Orm.”

Since he won’t be the main villain in Aquaman, it’s safe to assume that Black Manta will be the main antagonist in the next film, should there be one. This is an interesting way to do this in my opinion, saying that Black Manta will bring problems for Aquaman at some point, but at the moment he has more pressing issues. This will also allow viewers to better know where Manta came from as well as his motivations.

Even being fans of both Wan and Momoa, I had my doubts about this film, but I will say the underwater worlds are very impressive and that Wan thought of this film as a fantasy film as much as a superhero film seems to have paid off. While I am much more excited for Shazam!, I will be in the theater come this December for Jason Momoa’s oceanic adventure.
