Ava DuVernay Wishes She Was Offered More Unique Projects Like John Wick

Like many other industries out there, the movie biz is set in its ways. A lot of the people up top are making a lot of samey decisions, and that’s resulted in a lot of other similar voices rising to the top quicker than others. That’s kind of human nature, and it’s something many have been fighting against for decades and decades — and rightfully so. Enough beating around the bush: I’m talking about sex and race.

Nothing against all the talent in Hollywood, but for many years, it’s been dominated by a lot of white males, and when there are voices of different races and sexes present, they tend to get shoehorned into specific genres. Speaking with The Guardian, filmmaker Ava DuVernay discussed how she is only able to do what she does today because of the work she’s already done…but even she — an A-list director — doesn’t get a unique variety of projects thrown her way:

“I don’t get offered a lot, and what I do get offered is usually historical or something to do with women and black people. Like, I’m not getting John Wick 3, even though I’d love to make it. I have a good friend who directed second unit on Star Wars and is kicking ass. I have a friend who’s on Westworld right now. Are there enough of us? No. Certainly not for a lack of women being interested in or capable.”

I think the closest thing she’s gotten to John Wick is A Wrinkle in Time, and while I wasn’t a fan of that film, I am interested to see her take a stab at a more violence-driven property like John Wick.
