Avengers: Infinity War Directors The Russo Brothers On How Difficult It Is To Get A Superman Movie Right

The Russo Brothers certainly know a little about making good comic book movies, the director siblings have now directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and the upcoming sequel Avengers: Endgame for Marvel. It would be fair to say that fans and critics alike have been enjoying the pairs work so far in the comic book world.

In a recent interview with Business Insider the pair were asked about what would be the most difficult characters to adapt, and thoughts turned to rival DC’s oldest and most powerful character Superman.

Anthony Russo said:

“The more powerful a character is, the more difficult to deal with that character on a narrative level. As storytellers, and the way we explore characters, we always look for vulnerabilities in characters because that’s where characters become interesting. They’re superficially interesting in their strength, but they get much more depth when you find where they don’t have that kind of strength. In general, the more powerful a character is, the more tricky that is.”

Brother Joe then added in reference to Superman specifically:

“He’s a very difficult character, you have to find an emotional flaw or weakness in the character in order to make them vulnerable.”

I get where the Russo’s are coming from here, but at the same time, I kinda have to disagree when discussing Superman specifically.

Superman has been done successfully in comics, TV series, Cartoons and other movies for longer than any other hero. Yes, he presents challenges, because his power ceiling is so much higher than most any other comic book character. But there is still drama to be had with Superman for me. Superman tries to live a normal life as a Human being to the best of his abilities and the way he does that and the way he sees us a species and a society can provide a lot of vulnerabilities as Clark Kent, which may not apply to Superman himself.

Whilst I can see the same movie wouldn’t work now, the original Superman movie is still heralded as the template for all Marvel’s movies by none other than head honcho Kevin Feige. I would also argue that the Russos specifically, took a similar character in terms of a lack of character flaws in Captain America and made him one of my favorite superheroes. I was never a huge fan of Captain America in the comics and yet I love the way the Russos and their writing partners Markus and McFeely developed that character from The Winter Soldier onwards.

If the Russo’s ever want to challenge themselves to see if they can do something with Superman, I’d be all for it. Zack Snyder famously said something similar prior to helming Man of Steel and whilst I respect his bravery for then taking that job, I was not a fan of the way he deconstructed the character to make him more relatable. Superman should be the best of us, the person with the most power, who never uses it for his own gains and that would risk his life to protect any innocents. That’s the version of Superman that sticks with me, and the Russo’s have proved they can handle this in interesting ways with Captain America and Marvel.

Is anyone ever going to just hot on that magic Superman formula now, or will the character be shelved for years once more, who knows?
